Meet Lääne-Harju Municipality

About

Lääne-Harju Municipality, a rural area in northern Estonia with over 13.000 residents, is the first in the country to aim for “green municipality” status. Lääne-Harju leads sustainability initiatives like reducing food and textile waste, collaborating with businesses, and fostering community engagement. As a fellow of the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) it continues to champion sustainable development.

Role in CARE

Lääne-Harju Municipality is a key player in implementing the CARE pilots in Estonia, focusing on circular food and clothing interventions. Collaborating closely with the Zero Waste Estonia (ZWE), the municipality leads household recruitment and ensures active community participation. Their efforts include co-designing advisory services and fostering partnerships with local businesses to create sustainable solutions. As part of WP3 (Circular Food Pilots) and WP4 (Circular Clothing Pilots) Lääne-Harju also contributes to developing practical frameworks for reducing textile and food waste.
