Meet Verbraucher Initiative e.V.

40 years at the side of consumers

About

VERBRAUCHER INITIATIVE e.V. has been involved in ecological, health and social consumer work since 1985. What began with just a few people in a living room has developed into a national association that is supported by thousands and reaches millions with its issues. For 40 years, they have been providing information about the ecological and social production of goods, sustainable consumption, climate protection, nutrition, health, animal welfare, as well as work with senior citizens. Showing consumers individual options for action and motivating them to use their ‘power’ is key to their work ever since.

Role in CARE

VERBRAUCHER INITIATIVE e.V. plays a key role in the CARE project as a local partner based in Berlin, another Circular Cities and Regions Initiative region. The organization leads efforts to engage households in the Berlin area and supports the local implementation of circularity measures and advisory services. With decades of experience in consumer advocacy, VERBRAUCHER INITIATIVE ensures that the consumer perspective is at the heart of CARE’s initiatives. Its extensive network of contacts further enhances its ability to mobilize households and drive impactful change.

Team

The CARE project at VERBRAUCHER INITIATIVE is led by Miriam Bätzing, Head of Sustainability Division. Her expertise in sustainable consumer advocacy ensures the success of Berlin-based interventions.

  • Klima ändert Dich

VERBRAUCHER INITIATIVE is currently running the project “Klima ändert Dich!” (Climate changes you!) – promoting consumer-oriented climate adaptation in a target group-oriented manner’, which for the first time deliberately makes the issue of climate adaptation a testing ground for private households. As part of the association’s funding programme, the project is being part-funded by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) for a period of 12 months. Visit the project website here.

  • Nachhaltig digital unterwegs

The aim of “Nachhaltig digital unterwegs” (Digital sustainability in everyday life), funded by the German Environment Agency, was to promote more sustainable digital usage behavior by providing consumers with easy-to-implement recommendations for action and to raise public awareness of the climate impact of our digital footprint. To this end, the project initially conducted interviews with experts and a survey of consumers. In addition, test households were accompanied in the implementation of selected measures. The results obtained were then incorporated into the development of a self-check tool and suitable recommendations for consumers. Visit this website for more information.

  • Der "wahre" Preis

Der ‘wahre‘ Preis” (The “True” Price) was another project by VERBRAUCHER INITIATIVE e.V., funded by the German Environment Agency, focusing on the hidden environmental and social costs of food production. It aimed to raise awareness, engage consumers, and worked with businesses and policymakers to incorporate these external costs into pricing. Through research, dialogue, and pilot initiatives, the project promoted sustainable consumption and transformative changes in the food system. Visit the project website here.
